NOLAG FAQ

NOLAG:

What is NOLAG?

NOLAG is an acronym for Network of Local Area Gamers, a Student Group at the University of Manitoba.

So what do you guys do?

We are dedicated to putting on Local Area Network (LAN) Parties and hope to do so as often as possible. We also put on Retro Game nights where we play old console games as well as specialty events

Sweet, can I join?

Sure, though you aren’t required to be a member to attend the LAN Parties. If you would like to attend our meetings and determine what goes into future LAN Parties and events however, go talk to Trevor Lehmann or Matthew Chewka about membership.

So who runs NOLAG?

Trevor Lehmann and Matthew Chewka are Co-Presidents/Primarchs/Herculean Supermen. Matthew Nickel plays a role in hardware support and Ryan Stewart runs Table-Top Wargmingand helps

Receiving Assistance:

I’m having a software problem, what should I do?

You have two options. On one hand, if one of our tech support volunteers is nearby, you can go talk to them and they should be able to help you out. Alternatively, you can go directly to an Executive if they aren’t busy, and they can help you out.

I have an urgent or private problem that I don’t wish to share with many people?

In that case, simply come talk directly to either Trevor Lehmann, Matthew Chewka, or Matthew Nickel

Food:

Can we bring food?
Yes, you can bring food from on or off campus. Also feel free to leave and get food throughout the LAN Party.

When is Pizza being ordered?
Usually around 9:00 or 10:00 P.M at night from Pizza Hotline

How much will it cost?
$8.25-$9.00 for an Extra Large, 2-Topping Pizza (cheese already included)

Can we bring Alcohol?
No, no liquor is allowed. Additionally, if you come to the LAN Party drunk and are disruptive, you will be removed from the event without receiving a refund.

I got these great things called Energy Drinks, but I was wondering if there are any risks associated with them?

Yes, but not if used in moderation. Remember that each of those drinks packs a lot of sugar and caffeine (among other things) into them, so we strongly advise that at the absolute maximum, you avoid drinking more than one every three hours as they could over strain your body and theoretically cause a heart attack.

Why do I feel sick, tired, or that my eyes are on fire?

If you feel sick, it’s likely due to eating too much sugar. Try laying off the food for a few hours and see if it improves. Feeling tired may also be due to a sugar crash, though it could also be that it’s the middle of the night and you’re used to going to bed at 10:00. If your eyes are on fire, try turning off your monitor and go do something else other than use your computer.

I feel really sick and its getting worse. What should I do?

If you really aren’t feeling well, come talk to Trevor Lehmann, Matthew Chewka, or Matthew Nickel and they will work something out for you.

LAN Ettiquete:

Can I leave the LAN Party and come back later?

Yes, just be sure to keep you admission form so that you can get back in without any hassles.

So what exactly is improper LAN Etiquette?

Excessive Whining, Abusive Language, rolling your shirt up your chest until you look like a bar wench and proceeding to “make advances” to other gamers when they are playing. Most o f the time, it’s just common sense, but generally it’s anything that would be disruptive to other attendees. When in doubt, just ask yourself what would Gandalf do?

I want to start a game, but no one seems to be playing anything, what should I do?

First of you should look at the schedule to see if there is supposed to be gaming occurring at the current time. If there is or you really wish to start a game, we advise that you use the power of your voice and personality to see if anyone is interested in starting a game. Another thing to remember is that gaming at a LAN Party tends to come in waves with people occasionally taking a break to go get something to eat and/or socialize with other gamers. If no one else wants to play, maybe it’s a sign to go take a break and get to know your fellow gamers.

I feel like I have a ton of energy, why is that?

It’s probably due to the large amounts of sugar and caffeine consumed at the LAN Party. We may organize a physical activity to burn of some of it if there is sufficient demand.

Should I sleep at the LAN Party?

That’s a personal decision. The advantage of course is that sleeping for even two or three hours can allow you to stay awake for rest of the following day. The disadvantage is that while you’re asleep you can’t watch your possessions, so if you decide to sleep, we recommend that you get someone you trust to keep an eye on your possessions.

Packing Up, Leaving, and Aftereffects:

What all do I need to do before I can leave the LAN Party?

Make sure that you have all your equipment unplugged and packed, all garbage in the surrounding area is cleaned up, and that no one is sleeping on your equipment.

There is garbage in the surrounding area, but it’s not mine; should I still clean it up?

Yes, we want to leave a good impression on the University of Manitoba.

Can I have assistance moving equipment back to my vehicle?

Yes, assuming the volunteers who helped move people’s equipment to the LAN Party are still there.

I don’t feel very good, is it safe for me to drive?

That’s a decision only you can make. If you are concerned about your ability to drive, contact Trevor Lehmann, Matthew Chewka, or Matthew Nickel and we will see if we can arrange and alternative form of transportation.

Will I suffer abnormal sleeping patterns following the LAN Party?

Probably, though to what degree varies from person to person. Remember that you have just stayed up for 24 hours or longer, so your body will be under some strain. Some people will stay up for the remainder of the day or only sleep a couple of hours while others will sleep for fifteen hours straight when they get home. It’s also common to feel groggy for a day or two, though if you still have symptoms three days after the LAN Party, you may wish to seek medical attention.

Technical Questions:

What Operating System should I be running?

You should be running Windows XP or Vista. While other Operating Systems should work, be aware that we haven’t tested out the server on any other systems, so if you choose to use one, you do so at your own risk.

Should I have a firewall enabled?

No, you should have all firewalls disabled. You should however, have Avast or an alternative Virus Scanner running at all times. Additionally, you should have scanned your computer in the last few days, with Avast, Blacklight, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Adaware 2007.

I forgot to scan my computer and don’t have the above mentioned software, what should I do?

Go find Trevor Lehmann as we he will be wearing a USB necklace with a copy of all the files.

What should I do if I don’t have Avast or another virus scanner to protect my computer?

Again, go find Trevor Lehmann and his USB Necklace of +4 Virus Smiting

Should I give my username and Password to anyone else?

Absolutely not, as multiple entries will result in you crashing your login and inhibiting your access to the network.
