Major Room Changes

Posted by Trevor Lehmann On August - 17 - 20101 COMMENT

Okay everyone, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the UMSU Council Chambers are no longer available to us until Septembers. Yeah, I know it sucks, but what can you do? Well I will tell you what you can do, create a string of room string bookings and last minute settlements to ensure that all the events are able to keep going. So rather then having the events centered at a single room, we will now be using a series of rooms which we will journey to in an epic odyssey of gaming. To assist you on this journey, we will be providing a map (will be posted today) emphasizing the locations in which we will be having the different events hosted (see attachment). Additionally, we will be using twitter (https://twitter.com/nolaglans/) to provide our up to date locations in real time over the course of the 3 days. Finally, I will have my cell phone on throughout the event and all of you are welcome to call it at anytime to get guidance to our present location. I won’t post the number on the site, but if you email us (nolaguofm@gmail.com) requesting it, I can provide it to you there. Okay, so now that that is all done with, I will now give you the new locations of the events.

Retro Night:UMSU Council Chambers
-If for whatever reason this area becomes unavailable, we will relocate to the Fireside Lounge in the University Centre (Area in front of The Manitoban Office which now has the food court tables that it used to be across from in the University Center up until the recent renovations moved it. Basically just walk across he main floor of the university center and if you reach the store entrance of the bookstore you have gone to far).

PC Repair Center: UMSU Council Chambers

Board Game Day: Rooms 529, 530 and 531 of the University Center (Take the elevator to the 5th floor and wander around the halls until you find the rooms. We will be in one or all of them, with the other rooms being opened up as space is needed. The hall complexity is minimal on this floor.)

Movie Night: UMSU Council Chambers

Enigma Tournament: UMSU Council Chambers

So to recap, here are the following options you can use to find the room of the event(s) you want to attend:

1) Use this post and the map coming later today.

2) Follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/nolaglans/)

3) Call us

I apologize for the sudden change in plans, but rest assured that this Weekend of Gaming will continue. On that note however, I would like to mention that the NOLAG Panel has been canceled, though if interest is sufficient at the events we will host one in one of the 5th floor rooms at some point on Saturday. Until then, happy gaming.

Three Days of Gaming!

Posted by Matthew Chewka On August - 11 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Well ladies and gentlemen, it has been a long and relaxing summer, but if you are like me then you have felt that something is missing. Well NOLAG is here to fill that void with our brand weekend of gaming. Now I want to say right out of the gate that this is not going to be a LAN Party. For those of you wondering when the next LAN Party will be, we will be hosting one in early September before the school work gets to heavy. What this will be however, is a series of six separate events over the course of three days. The Weekend of Gaming will take place from Friday August 20th to Sunday August 22nd and will include the following events:

Retro Night:
Time: August 20th 7:00 P.M – 2:00 A.M
Location: UMSU Council Chambers (In the Tunnels between Helen Glass and the University Center)
Cost: Free
For NOLAG veterans, you are more then familiar with this event. Bring in your old consoles (anything before the PS2) and enjoy a night of old school gaming in the company of other gamers. Reminisce about the good old days and show off your skills in games made in a time when A.A was associated more with taking down aircraft then smoothing out polygons.

Board & Card Games Day:
Time: August 21st 9:00 A.M – 11:00 P.M
Location: UMSU Council Chambers
Cost: Free
I like to think of this as a preparation exercise as much as a day of gaming. You see, when the Zombie Apocalypse occurs (and it will occur), all power will be diverted to powering electrical fences, hybrid cars, and possibly the odd tesla gun for the lucky few. So what’s a gamer to do in a situation where power is insufficient to sustain a Console or PC any longer then to check our email and perhaps watch a burlesque video? Play battery-less games, that’s what. So bring out your card games, board games, and war games (I am looking forward to seeing at least one game of Warhammer or Warmachine) and enjoy yourself in this fun zombie apocalypse preparation exercise.

PC Repair Center:
Time: To be determined (Some time in the afternoon of August 21st)
Location:
UMSU Council Chambers
Cost: To be determined (Think $25-30)
So you’ve come to grips with the fact that paint can dry faster then your computer can surf the internet. You have more pop-ups then icons on your desktop at boot and your PC idling emits higher decibels then a Motor Cycle revving its engines. Well fret no more, just bring it to the NOLAG PC repair center and we will have it running smoothly in no time (not a guarantee). You might not like the solutions we propose, but you can be sure that your PC will be up and gaming; and for a bargain fee no less. Note however, that we will not replace computer parts, so don’t expect us to run to Memory Express to get you a new CPU should you need one.

Movie Night:
Time: August 21st 11:00 P.M – 7:00 A.M
Location: UMSU Council Chambers
Cost: Free
Exactly what it sounds like people. An all night movie marathon of your favorite video game to movie creations. Expect to see Mortal Kombat, Silent Hill, Resident Evil and more.

NOLAG Panel:
Time: To be determined
Location:
UMSU Council Chambers
Cost: Free
This event is still in the planning stages, but expect an audience driven discussion of gaming and the industry with your favorite NOLAG Executives and possibly some special guests as well answering any questions you may have and lending their views on all things gaming. Please, leave all inorganic projectiles at the doorway (and Pineapples…those things hurt).

The NOLAG Enigma Tournament:
Time: 11:00 A.M (August 22nd)
Location: UMSU Council Chambers
Cost: $5.00 Entry Fee

So you have seen all the typical gaming tournaments, which test your skill at one game or, if they are really feeling risky, one genre. Well we here at NOLAG believe that any gamer worth their Mithril should be able to demonstrate skill in any number of game genres as well as on general game knowledge and trivia. With that said, it’s time to sort out the brass from the rest. NOLAG will be hosting the Enigma Tournament beginning at 11:00 A.M on August 22nd and will include a marathon of games to be revealed at the tournament itself as well as a trivia section on general game knowledge. Expect a five dollar entry fee that will go towards prizes and a round-robin style of organization (subject to change). It’s unknown how the long the event will last (this is the first tournament after all), but expect a few hours at least. If you are interested, please shoot us an email (nolaguofm@gmail.com) expressing your interest as soon as possible to ensure yourself a spot if you wish to participate. As always, happy gaming and we hope to see you at the 3 days of gaming. As it stands, tournament sign ups have been low, so we require an additional five members to commit to participating in the tournament by Monday night (August 16th) or we will be forced to cancel the Enigma Tournament.

As always, standard LAN Party rules apply:

1. No Hacking/Cheating
2. No unauthorized roughhousing, brawling, dueling, office chair jousting, going Super-Saiyen, etc.
3. No Abusive/Grossly Inappropriate language (Be aware that due to the close proximity of gamers at the LAN Party, violations of this rule often results in subsequent violations of rule #2)
4. Keep smack talk to a minimum (See Rule #3)
6. No inappropriate handling of your own property (Clothes stay on, no matter how hot the room gets)
7. No Alcohol on the premises

8. You must have had a shower within at least 24 hours of attending the LAN Party…no exceptions
9. Clean up all garbage you see (especially spills), we have been given an awesome room and would like to have it for future LAN Parties as well
10. No displaying of Pornographic materials (No one wants to see a Star Wars Ton Ton in a compromised position with Princess Leia…again)
11. Share the Controllers (these games may be single-player…SO SHARE DAMNIT!!!
)

Retro Games Night

Posted by Trevor Lehmann On May - 20 - 20107 COMMENTS

Any veteran of NOLAG knows where I am going with this by the subject line alone. I shall however, explain it to the uninitiated- i.e those who don’t know that when I say MARIO you jump and when I say LUIGI you jump…stupidly and vigorously tread air (that was joke for those fans of Super Mario Bros 2). A video game Retro Night is basically an evening where people bring down their consoles and televisions (both are optional) and share them with other gamers in a marathon of classic video games. A classic video game we define as any video game released before PS2, though some exceptions have been made (i.e virtual consoles emulating old games). The event is entirely free and open to anyone and everyone, so bring you friends, lovers, marriage partners, ex-marriage partners, etc.

The next Video games Retro Night will be held on May 29th from 7:00 P.M until 2:00 A.M (or whenever the callouses begin to impede our ability to speed run Mario and Castlevania). It will be held at the UMSU Council Chambers in the tunnels between Helen Glass and University Center (the room with  the symbol of the AOL men holding hands on the floor in front of the doors). The rules will be the same as usual, but for those of you that are new or make a hobby out of headbutting hard objects, I have included the rules below.

Most Standard LAN Party Rules Apply:

Be sure to check out our site for updates and information on this event and others. As always, if you have any questions you can email us.

End of Semester LAN Party!

Posted by Matthew Chewka On April - 24 - 20106 COMMENTS

Well ladies and gentlemen, if you are like me then you are pretty much at your wits end at this point (and if you aren’t it is probably best that you don’t make this fact know to me…things could happen), what with exams bearing down on you from all directions (you can tell when a gamer is writing) and all you having to protect yourself is your wits and enough coffee to supply an army platoon for a drink. With that in mind however, I can appreciate that what keeps us going in times such as these is a light at the end of the tunnel…and this is where NOLAG comes in. In celebration of exams ending the coming week (assuming you are in University), we are happy to announce the next LAN Party will take place on April 30th and run until May 2nd (for those of you who are regulars, the setup was more less the same as the last two). For you newcomers, or those of you that have found yourselves doing altogether to little gaming later and thus have missed the last LAN Party or two (NOLAG cheerleaders and cross-dressing vampire LARPers is all I am going to say on the subject of the last LAN Party), here is everything you need to know. As always, no information is set in stone, so be sure to keep checking your email…and the NOLAG site (www.nolaglans.com).

When:
Doors and set-up will begin at 7:00 P.M on April 30th and gaming will be begin at around 9:00 P.M. The LAN Party itself will go until 2:00 A.M on May 2nd. You are free to come and ago at any point during this time period, though please be sure to notify an executive when you go to leave (Trevor, Chewka or Nickel).

Where:
The University of Manitoba Student Union’s Council Chambers located in the tunnels connecting University Center to the Helen Glass Nursing Center. It has a tile design of AOL men holding hands outside the door with the interior of the council chambers resembling a room that James Bond villains would order the launch of warheads from. It has a massive circular table with a donut-hole in the center and many wheeled chairs. Most parking is free at the University after 4:30, with virtually all spots not specifically labeled “24-hour reserved parking” being accessible (though if it says Monday-Friday under it, it’s fair game for you guys). Please don’t use the Parkade as they will charge you and due to the free parking elsewhere, it makes no sense to do so.

What Games:
We are focusing our support on the games listed below, though we do offer support for several others if their proves to be a sufficient demand from players at the LAN Party. As always, this list isn’t set in stone and may be subject to change at any time.

First Person Shooters:

1.Team Fortress 2
2. Left 4 Dead
3. Unreal Tournament 2004
4. Call of Duty 4
5. Alien Versus Predator 3

Real Time Strategies:t

1. Starcraft
2. Warcraft 3
3. Dawn of War
4. Dawn of War 2
5. Age of Empires 2
6. Age of Empires 3

Turn Based Strategy:

1.Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Role Playing:

1.Titan Quest

*If you don’t have all of the games, please come anyway and we will figure something out

Food:

Right now we are still nailing down  the details of our food plans for the LAN Party, so bear in mind that this plan is still highly tentative. Confirmation and additional details will be provided in a future email.

We will be ordering Pizza Hotline at 8:30 P.M (on Saturday, May 1st) with the cost being between $9.50 to $10.00 (depending on whether they have recently changed their prices/discount) for an Extra Large 2-topping Pizza. Additionally, if you choose to order Steak, the cost will increase by $1.00. Finally, for Friday evening and Saturday morning/afternoon, we will be playing those by ear based on what people are in the mood for. We may organize a car pool to a local restaurant or simply do a burger run, depending on what attendees want. As always, you guys are welcome to bring any snacks/energy drinks you want or buy them on campus after you’ve arrived, though alcohol is prohibited.

Rules & Regulations:

1. No Hacking/Cheating (All your base does not belong to you)
5. No unauthorized handling of other attendees property
6. No inappropriate handling of your own property (Clothes stay on, no matter how hot the room gets)
7. No Alcohol on the premises (Tom: Hello Jim, what are you doing. Jim: Well Tom, I am drinking this liquid over several $1000’s worth of electronics that impairs my judgement and hand eye coordination…)

8. You must have had a shower within at least 24 hours of attending the LAN Party…no exceptions…seriously…I mean it this time
9. Clean up all garbage you see (especially spills), as we have been given an awesome room and would like to have it for future LAN Parties as well
10. No displaying of Pornographic materials (Yes, Starwars themed Hentai counts too)
11. You must have some form of virus scanner running (example: Avast) as don’t forget, when you connect to another computer you’re also connecting to every PC they’ve connected to (since their last reformat at least)
12. Please no Firewalls (anonomyous LAN Party attendee: Trevor, Trevor why can’t I connect to your PC?  Trevor: Have you tried turning off that program that is designed to block things from connecting to your PC?
anonomyous LAN Party attendee: Uhhhhh….)

A Note about Wireless Devices:
We are asking everyone to please, please not bring a wireless mouse or keyboard or any other wireless devices if at all possible (excluding Cell Phones). This is due to the fact that wireless signals often interfere with one another, resulting in limited functionality for users of similar wireless devices. Put in simple terms: 1 wireless device = :) , 2 or more wireless devices = CLUSTER F*CK

Entry Fee:
There will be a $5 dollar entry fee to get into the LAN Party. We don’t offer refunds (except for special cases). Please make our lives easier and pay with exact change/bills and don’t try to get us to break a $100 bill or any crazy crap like that for you. Upon paying, you will be issued a Login code to access our server software. Until you pay, you will not be issued a login code and thus, not allowed to access our central server.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We are looking for volunteers to help with directing people to the room, moving equipment, and acting as a door greeter/receptionist/bouncer, so if any of those positions appeal to you, please let us know as soon as possible. Additionally, we are encouraging everyone to take the initiative in encouraging others to attend the LAN Party, so if you have any friends or family that would be interested in attending, be sure to bring them along. As much as we try to advertise, in the end word of mouth is the most effective means of recruitment.

Contacting us during the LAN Party:
During the LAN Party, we won’t have access to the Internet (being a LAN Party and all), so if you really need to contact us, you can call my cell at 798-7607. I am giving you guys this number because I trust that no one will abuse/misuse this information, so please guys don’t prove this to be a poor judgement call on my part.

Transportation:
If anyone is having trouble with transportation to the LAN Party or after it, it’s very important that you contact us as soon as possible so that we can make arrangement for car-pooling or alternative transportation. It likely won’t be a problem if you tell us soon, but it may become more difficult if you wait until closer to the LAN Party date to contact us. Also, as previously stated, the LAN Party will be ending at around 2:00 A.M. Please bear that in mind when deciding on how you are going to get home. If you are relying on a ride from your parents, please bare in mind that unless they are borderline insomniacs and enjoy late night driving (like mine), than you may have to make alternative arrangements such as leaving a couple hours early. Additionally, please bear in mind that the Bus Services may end at 2:00 A.M, so don’t rely to much on taking the bus home. I will be able to carpool at most two people, home and we may be able to take a couple more, but please don’t rely on the LAN hosts for a ride home. With that said, we wholeheartedly support the bumming of rides off of friends, friend’s parents, friend’s siblings, friend’s Ex’s, etc.

Preparation:
I have be sending a checklist of items that you may/will need for the LAN Party.
